Southlake Profile

If you have return customers, you have a good business. If medical students come back as residents, that is considered the mark of a successful new Family Medicine Teaching Unit (FMTU). In July 2010, the Southlake Regional Health Centre (SRHC) FMTU welcomed back, this time as residents, three learners they taught as medical students. more

Passion and a plan: the New Vice-Chair, Education

There is significant untapped expertise in medical education among the DFCM faculty. It is the role of the Department’s Vice-Chair, Education to support faculty as they develop and share scholarly work. In other words, the Vice-Chair, Education is here to foster educational scholarship so our faculty’s knowledge, expertise and innovation can be applied more widely in medical education. more

The Teaching Practice Program on tour

The DFCM Teaching Practices (TP) program is on the road visiting preceptors far and wide. So far we’ve logged 3,500 hundred kilometres in 30 hours and visited 17 communities. more

Integrating a Physician Assistant into your practice

For nearly sixty years, physicians in the United States have been working with Physician Assistants (PAs). In January 2010, the University of Toronto-granted degree, the Bachelor of Science Physician Assistant (BScPA), was inaugurated. The DFCM houses the twenty-four month degree program, which is delivered in collaboration with The Consortium of PA Education. more

New Master of Public Health in Family & Community Medicine

Considering an academic career or ready to establish, enhance or expand your career? DFCM offers a new Canadian Master of Public Health (MPH) degree specifically for family physicians and other primary care practitioners. It is designed to prepare family physicians for academic and scholarly leadership. more

Family Medicine research mentorship

Although family medicine is an old profession, the practice of family physicians conducting primary care research is relatively new.  It remains somewhat uncommon for family physicians to develop major research careers.  Because of this, when family physicians do decide to enter the field, finding guidance on how best to blend the demands of being a practicing family physician and a primary care researcher can be somewhat challenging. more

Profile of a research mentor: Dr. Rick Glazier

Dr. Richard Glazier began his career as a family physician in the 1980’s in the small Ontario communities of Whitby and Oshawa just east of Toronto. After a very fulfilling three month locum that lasted six years, he decided that he wanted to have a larger impact on the field of primary care. more
